Dumpsters can store a lot, but sometimes, renters don’t get the most bang for their buck. If a dumpster is overflowing with materials that have not been broken down, it means the dumpster has the potential to encase so much more. Ultimately, this can slow down the process and make a larger mess. Clean as you go is a household adage, but one that works on job sites too. Knowing how to properly load a dumpster can mean your workers can better focus on other parts of the project, saving the contractor time and money.
Get the Most Out of Your Dumpster Rental by Following These 5 Safety Tips
Bulk at the Bottom
You don’t want heavy materials at the top of your dumpster. Filling a dumpster up can be like playing Tetris, and that means finding a way to economically pack materials to make for a fuller dumpster. Organize furniture or other big pieces first so there is room for other smaller items to go on top of them.
Flatten Cardboard
Filling a dumpster with opened boxes will make it more difficult to put items on top of them. Meanwhile, flattening boxes and folding them up creates neat piles that will take up a fraction of the space. Flatten as you go, and have a box cutter on hand to make this a speedier process.
Evenly Distribute Weight
To increase safety when a dumpster is loaded out or in transit, it’s important to evenly distribute weight. When weight is spread out across a dumpster (with heavier items on the bottom and lighter ones on top), accidents are less likely to happen.
Break Items Down
Whether you are packing in foam, planks of wood, glass, or drywall, it’s important to break those items down into smaller bits so they more easily condense in the dumpster. This increases the value of the dumpster as you will be able to fit more into it. You can similarly break down cabinetry or pieces of furniture by removing their screws and creating a more compact item.
Don’t Overpack
Loading items too high can be untidy at best and dangerous at worst. Loose goods will spill out during load out and may fall out while on the road, creating a hazard for anyone driving behind the rental team. Overloading means space isn’t used properly and can lead to accidents on the road.
