Projects come in all shapes and sizes. Some are day-long events (such as coming by to pick up debris after a storm), others are long-term over weeks and months (like the construction of a house, or tearing down an old one). This means the scope of each project is different, and each will require a dumpster for a different amount of time.
Dumpsters are helpful in keeping your job site clean so you have a tidy property to work with. They also help your property from becoming an ugly eye sore as they house all the wood, detritus, dirt, and other materials that come with a busy work site. The disposing of materials should be incorporated into your production schedule, and knowing how large a dumpster size you need (20 yard for small or medium projects and 30 yard for heavy-duty work) is also important when putting your budget together.
The Good News Is You Can Rent a Dumpster for as Long as You Need It
There are, however, a few important things to consider.
Plan Ahead
When mapping out your project, you want to see how long it will last. That duration will likely match how long you need the dumpster for. Be sure to plan these projects well in advance so the dumpster company has time to process your request and clean and deliver your rented dumpster in a timely manner.
Be Communicative
Let the dumpster company know what kind of project you are working on. They will tell you what can and can not go in their dumpsters, what to expect from drop off and pick up, and any other specifications you may need to know. They can also help advise you: if you are unsure how big of a dumpster you need to rent, tell them about your work and they will be able to steer you in the right direction.
Factor in More Time
The last thing you want is to tell a dumpster company what you think your project end date is, have them show up to pick up the rented dumpster, but you say you need the dumpster for more time. That won’t always work. Dumpster rental companies are on a tight schedule, and they need to get the dumpster when the assigned time is so it can be prepped for the next job. For this reason, it’s important to factor in more time than you think you need. A job might end, but there may still be planks of wood, roof shingles, and excess dirt to clean up. Factor in extra time — a week is often a good idea — so that you won’t be caught off guard. If you finish early, you can get in touch with the company. And if you feel, halfway through the project, you are going to need more time, just be sure to clearly communicate with the company so they can see if they can rearrange the schedule.
