old tires

You don’t have to work at an automobile facility or car junkyard to wonder if you can put tires in a rental dumpster. Bulldozers and bobcats endure a lot, which means tires may break and need to be disposed of as using damaged ones can be hazardous on a worksite. Or you might just think that a dumpster, large and spacious, is a fine place to trash your leftover tires because it’s easy to store them there. While this may all seem convenient, unfortunately, you cannot throw tires in a dumpster. It is not safe or legal.

Throwing Tires in a Dumpster Can Result in Fines

For most rental companies, storing tires in a dumpster is illegal and can get you fined. This is very important for environmental reasons: whole tires are not allowed in trash yards because the hollow space at the center of the tire traps methane gas. The gas gets trapped in that empty center when the tires are smushed underneath other garbage in the landfills. That methane will then actually cause the tire to float to the top of the trash heap, shoving aside other garbage and then potentially puncturing the protective liner that helps the landfill not pollute the environment at large.

Special Agreements for Accepting Tires

All of this means that tires are not safe to dispose of in rental dumpsters, regardless of their size. Sometimes, dumpster companies can help arrange handling and properly disposing tires, but renters should check in with the company before throwing out tires. Communication is key.  And if you are able to dispose of tires in a rental dumpster via special agreement, it is important that the tires are not mixed with other materials.

The Good News Is There Are Still Easy Ways to Get Rid of Tires

Tires can be used in many sustainable and creative ways. They take up a lot of space in trash yards and can be environmentally hazardous, but they can be taken to most car service companies or recycling facilities. Check out these spots in your community or call ahead to see where you can bring your used tires.

Old tires can be upcycled, refurbished and used for certain vehicles, or they may be broken down to be used as a tire version of astroturf. Those bits may be used at playgrounds or sports fields as a form of mulch. Some people also transform tires and its pieces into outdoor lounge chairs, or they can be used whole to be a plant bed. People will put soil into them and grow flowers and herbs to greenify their spaces while recycling old materials. In more creative instances, tires can be used as part of an obstacle course or in workouts because of their size and weight.

It’s even worth seeing if anyone in your area is purchasing old tires for their own use so that you can make a little money off of your product. This is all to say, while tires can’t be disposed of in a dumpster, there are still many ways to utilize and recycle them.
